To return to sustainable printing, Kaj Niegmann designed a do-it-yourself ink toolkit: a self powered letterpress that prints business cards, merchandise tags, and other small designs. The press encourages small scale production and sustainability in printing. It was presented within the exhibition “Now/Then” by the Lund University, within the Greenhouse programme at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. Behind Hand and Ink, the designer observes how printing has rapidly shifted from local and sustainable materials to electric-powered machines that release volatile organic compounds, and non renewable oil based inks. It is time to put an effort, starting from the small scale.
