2013 saw the Maha Kumbh Mela. A Hindu festival held once every 12 years at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. This vast pilgrimage resulted in the largest single gathering of people ever in history. It is impossible to know the number of attendees but it is estimated that as many as 100 million visited the site over the period of the festival. Individuals, families and whole villages made the pilgrimage from the most rural parts of India to bathe at dawn in the sacred Ganges River.
