Face-o-mat

by Tobias Gutmann

“I’m a portrait machine, I’m a psychiatrist, I do plastic surgery, I’m a prophet. I see behind the face, I’m an illustrator, I am Face-o-mat”
“We want machines to make our lives easier, we need machines to work harder, we like machines that make us lonely, we can’t live without machines. We are not machines” Tobias Gutmann

Face-o-mat is a social, portable, analog portrait-machine by Tobias Gutmann that happened to travel 49’472 km, from Stockholm to Milan, Dar es Salaam, Tokyo, London, Copenhagen, Basel, Frankfurt, Madrid and Zürich to produce over  1’350 portraits.
The social portrait-booth was originally made of cardboard found in the trash, but has been upgraded to MDF to better withstand traveling. In 2013 Face-o-mat won gold in the swedish illustration competition ‘Kolla!‘ and was selected for the international student award :Output. Face-o-mat was also nominated for the Swiss Design Awards in 2014.
